Major Destinations

Just 55 km north of Sydney, the winding estuary of the Hawkesbury River feels a world away.

Surrounded by steep, forested slopes, the serene bays and inlets along the Hawkesbury River provided an enclave for early settlers and are still dotted with a hidden legacy of sandstone ruins, historic cottages and convict trails.

Today the area offers a bounty of areas to escape to, relax in and explore. It is the ideal location for a riverside holiday or weekend escape.

The best way to enjoy the river is, naturally, on the expansive, tranquil waterway. You’ll also find bushwalking, picnic spots and even canoeing and mountain bike trails in the region’s national parks and reserves.

North of Sydney Harbour you will find an area known for beautiful beaches, gorgeous bushwalks and a host of family activities.

You’ll find the famous Manly Beach and Palm Beach, bookending a beautiful stretch of coastline known as the Northern Beaches, including Dee Why, Curl Curl and Narrabeen. This area offers great surf beaches, cliff-top walks, and alfresco dining options.

Take a stroll down one of many beautiful beaches in Sydney’s south. Follow walking trails along the rugged coastline of Kamay Botany Bay National Park or in the beautiful Royal National Park, one of the world’s oldest national parks. Along the way, watch for native flora and fauna on rock platforms in sand dunes and freshwater streams.

Dramatic cliff tops that you can explore on foot, sprawling white beaches, lush rainforest and historic landmarks make this a fascinating part of Sydney to visit year-round. Beachside suburbs include Cronulla, Maroubra and Malabar. On the edge of Royal National Park, you’ll also find Bundeena, just a short ferry ride from Cronulla.

In the Sutherland Shire, Cronulla Beach is one of Sydney’s icons and an ideal place for a short getaway. Alongside the extensive stretch of sand is a buzzing cafe and restaurant scene, perfect for a hot coffee or leisurely lunch.

As you head inland from the city centre to the foothills of the Blue Mountains, you’ll uncover plenty of things to see and do in Sydney’s West.
