8 Tips to Reduce Fuel Use When Towing a Caravan

Trips might look a little different right now, but you can still get more out of every litre and hit the road. Road trip longer, slow it down, and stay longer for smarter towing, lower fuel bills and more adventure.

1. Get your weight right for better towing

  • The heavier your setup, the harder your vehicle works.
  • Aim for 8-12% ball weight (within limits)
  • Keep heavy items low and close to the axle. Remove gear you don’t need from your vehicle and van

TIP: A weigh check = peace of mind + better fuel economy.

2. Slow down and use less fuel

  • Wind resistance increases sharply above 90-95 km/h.
  • Dropping from 100 to 90 km/h can reduce fuel use.
  • You’ll arrive safer and more relaxed.

TIP: Arrive 30 minutes later, use noticeably less fuel.

3. Improve your aerodynamics

  • Remove roof racks when not in use.
  • Keep gear and bikes off the roof.
  • Close windows and hatches while driving.
  • Streamline where you can.

TIP: Less drag = less fuel.

4. Don't underestimate your tyres

  • Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance.
  • Check pressures on your tow vehicle AND caravan.
  • Adjust for your load.
  • Don’t forget the spare!

TIP: Correct tyre pressure helps improve fuel efficiency

5. Drive smoother, not harder

  • Accelerate gently.
  • Maintain steady speeds.
  • Use cruise control on flat roads.
  • Let the engine brake downhill

TIP: Smooth driving = lower fuel use + a safer, more comfortable trip.

6. Keep your vehicle well maintained

  • Clean air filter (especially in dusty conditions).
  • Check fluids and engine oil.
  • Inspect wheel alignment.
  • Ensure transmission is in good shape.

TIP: A well-maintained vehicle runs more efficiently.

7. Plan your route and conitions

  • Headwinds and hills use more fuel.
  • Travel early when winds are lighter.
  • Avoid peak traffic.
  • Plan your fuel stops.
  • Get more out of your stops – combine fuel, food and breaks

TIP: Not all kilometres are equal, plan smart.

8. Use the right gear

    • Use towing mode if you have it.
    • Keep the engine in its most efficient range.
    • Use manual mode to reduce gear hunting and fuel burn.
  •
  • TIP: Towing mode is your best friend.
