Motorhomes

Imagine driving off with no cares or worries and no destination in mind but knowing you have everything you need for your journey.

Motorhomes are made for year-round holidaying and have such facilities as toilets/showers and air conditioners, making them self-contained and extremely comfortable and require no setting up once you are at your destination.

Motorhomes are often built on a light truck or van cabin, however many A grade vehicles have the same look and size as a bus.

A Motorhome is a self-powered, self-contained unit driven from a cabin that allows easy access to the rest of the vehicle, combining living and travelling and are easy to drive with all of the refinements of modern cars. Large motorhomes (over 4.5 tonne GVM) require an endorsed license.

Class A motorhomes are typically top-end RV’s, 7-12 metres long and 7-14 tonnes, with custom bodywork on a specialised RV chassis or adapted truck chassis. Usually fitted with all luxury amenities, they can cost up to half a million dollars, even more.

Class C Motorhomes range from economy to luxury models built on a cab-chassis with a caravan-style body. Weighing 4.5-7 tonnes, and measuring 6-13 metres, they retain the donor vehicle’s cabin, often with an overhead bunk. Slide-outs are increasingly common.

You have a large choice of options to suit your budget and travel plans and it is highly recommended before you invest in a motorhome you consider hiring to ensure it is what you want – a small cost outlay compared to the purchasing cost. It may not be what you are looking for but it will at least provide you with the opportunity to discover your likes and dislikes.

Considerations

Things to consider

  • Are more sturdy than caravans and handle the road much better
  • Can carry more weight which means you can pack more items
  • Has the capability to tow an object behind it i.e boat, bikes, small car
  • Most Motorhomes you can drive with an a “Class C” license i.e. normal car license but it is recommended to check due to size of the vehicle you purchase
  • Being a larger vehicle they can be harder to manoeuvre
  • Consumes more fuel due to its size
  • May need a smaller vehicle to tow for those errands in town or hard to get to destinations

Preparing To Buy

Before you set off to the showrooms or dealers, take the time to ask yourself the following questions:

  • List everything you want in the caravan then classify them into ‘You Wish’ & “You Need’.
  • Where do you plan to go in your motorhome in the next two years?
  • Where will you store the motor home? (Calculate the maximum height restriction)
  • Will you be towing behind the motorhome when travelling?
  • How much space do you need inside? (Consider how many people will sleep in it and storage requirements)
