Shoalhaven North

The small village of Cudmirrah is located a short drive away from Sussex Inlet, just south of Nowra, and is ideally positioned to take advantage of the stunning coastline and both beach and lake activities.

Cudmirrah is at the end of a peninsula surrounded by ocean & state forests, and there is no through traffic with Sussex Inlet being the closest township in the Shoalhaven north region.

Culburra Beach is the regional centre for the coastal villages east of Nowra. A surfers delight, the town boasts the two closest surf beaches to Nowra and is home to the Culburra Beach and Nowra Surf Club whose clubhouse is located at the northern end of Warrain Beach.

Fisherman will also enjoy a stopover in Culburra & Greenway Point where a wide variety of fish species are caught on the beaches and from the adjacent rocky headlands.

Greenway Point is one of the leading seafood ports in the Shoalhaven. Holiday makers continue to be entertained by the resident squadron of pelicans which gather in the local park to the delight of youngsters and the young at heart.

Huskisson is a natural magnet for fans of water sports and classic Australian beach holidays. Migrating whales are often sighted inside the bay between May and November while fur seals and dolphins can be seen from cruise vessels based in Huskisson. This is Australia’s most northerly fur seal colony, as well as the only mainland colony.

This riverside centre is the commercial hub of the Shoalhaven North.

Taking its name from the Aboriginal word meaning ‘camping place’, it is the ideal place to stop at a caravan or holiday park to use as your base to explore the surrounding region. The distinctive bridge and elevated helicopter will welcome you as you enter the township and the attractive landscaped gardens and parks offer a wonderful backdrop for a stroll through the streets or to relax with friends at the local restaurants and cafes.

Shoalhaven Heads is a tranquil beach resort town in an idyllic location where the Shoalhaven River flows into the ocean. The meeting of river and sea provides it with a wide array of water sports such as fishing, surfing and boating. You can even go for a leisurely river cruise. Shoalhaven Heads is an excellent base from which to explore the local area.

Take a long hike along Seven Mile Beach where you’ll pass beach fishermen, families playing on the sand and kids flying kites. The beach is part of Seven Mile Beach National Park and has several good picnic spots, walkway and viewing platform.

Situated on the southern side of the beautiful waterways at the neck of St Georges Basin. The area also caters for nature lovers with a wide variety of reserves and bush and beach walks to ensure you get a taste of the beauty and serenity of the unspoilt natural environment.

Much of the town is built around a system of tidal canals, offering water panoramas and easy access for boating enthusiasts. There are ocean beaches just to the south and the broad expanse of St George’s Basin to the north, while Jervis Bay is just a few kilometres away.

At its southern end, Jervis Bay is enclosed by Booderee National Park, a pristine coastal wilderness. From Wreck Bay village on Summercloud Bay in the park’s south, a walking trail circles the peninsula to St Georges Head, passing a succession of quiet beaches, cliffs and forests.

The Basin is made up of number of townships:

• The idyllic setting of St Georges Basin has made the township one of the fastest growing towns in the Shoalhaven North in recent years. The protected waters of the basin allows for swimming, family picnics, water-skiing, canoeing and more. This peaceful spot is perfect for the whole family to enjoy sailing, swimming, water-skiing, kayaking and snorkelling.
• Sanctuary Point is a quiet and attractive township on the shores of Jervis Bay. Enjoy a peaceful retreat and the quiet natural surrounds of this hideaway place on the south coast of NSW.
• Erowal Bay is a small and quiet township.

Don’t miss Booderee National Park Botanic Garden which is a short drive from Sanctuary Point and well worth a visit. The scenic 40-minute Basin Walk follows the shoreline from Palm Beach Reserve to Paradise Beach Reserve. Conjola National Park has forests surrounding beautiful lakes and estuaries, and large areas of woodland and heath which become a mass of wildflowers in spring. The park is ideal for walking, bird watching, swimming, fishing and canoeing.
